The history of the PETROF brand

Petrof Factory

1839 - The founder of the company, Antonín Petrof is born.
1857 - Antonín Petrof goes to Vienna, where he studies piano craft at the following companies: HEITZMAN, EHRBAR, SCHWEIGHOFER.
1864 - Hradec Králové – manufacture of the first concert piano.
1865 - Antonín Petrof transforms father’s woodworking workshop in the old city behind the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit into a piano workshop.
1866 - Austrian-Prussian battle of Königgrätz (Hradce Králové) – interruption of manufacture
1874 - The company moves to new premises outside of the city (towards Brno), manufacture of harmoniums (besides pianos) begins.
1880 - A subsidiary factory is opened in Timisoara, then-Hungary. 
1881 - Own manufacture of keyboards and construction of mechanics begin.
1883 - The manufacture of upright pianos is commenced. 
1895 - The beginning of exports abroad, a warehouse and a service center in Vienna.
1899 - Antonín Petrof is named a court piano manufacturer of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and a secret councillor by the emperor. Both titles later pass down to his sons. 
1908 - The company is changed to a General partnership (veřejná obchodní společnost). Marie Petrofová becomes a confidential clerk of the company. Besides the founder, sons Jan and Antonín, and later since 1914 also Vladimír (II. generation) work here.
1915 - Antonín Petrof and his wife Marie pass away. During the war, the company is managed by the youngest son Vladimír.
1924 - The manufacture of electric pianos is introduced, later also radio acoustic pianos. At this time, PETROF already exports also to Japan, China, Australia and South America. 
1928 - PETROF opens a new branch office in London’s Wigmore Street together with a prominent american company STEINWAY. Management of the company expands with the third generation of the family: Dimitrij, Eduard and Eugen.
1934 - GRAND PRIX – PETROF instruments are awarded a gold medal at the global exhibition in Brussels. The are 400 employees working in the factory.
1948 - Nationalization of the factory. Petrof family is deprived of its property and rights. 
1954 - Department of grand and upright pianos development is established. 
1958 - EXPO Brussels – gold medal for the concert grand piano PETROF Mondial. Manufacture of harmoniums is terminated. 
1991 - Ing. Jan Petrof (IV. generation) takes the lead of the company after 43 years of totalitarian regime – the beginning of the privatization process. 
1994 - A new modern research center with own high-volume anechoic measuring chamber, the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic. 
1997 - Upright Pianos Factory (Továrna na pianina, a. s.) is established in Hradec Králové. 
1998 - The process of privatization of the company – PETROF spol. s r.o. is finished.
1999 - 135th anniversary of the foundation of PETROF.
2001 - PETROF, spol. s r. o. – ownership of the factory goes completely to the Petrof family, the 5th generation takes the lead. 
2003 - Magnetically Accelerated Action (Magneticky akcelerovaná mechanika (MAA)) is patented.
2004 - 140th anniversary of the PETROF’s foundation – Mgr. Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová (5th generation) becomes the CEO of the company. Manufacture of upright pianos and piano mechanics of own construction is reestablished.
2005 - Mgr. Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová is named a president of the Confederation of European Music Industries – CAFIM.
2006 - Production range of 5 different piano lengths, concert grand piano P 210 Pasat and PETROF VI are added. The instruments can be optionally provided with an own magnetically balanced keyboard. 
2007 - Instruments of the PETROF brand are labeled with a new award, EUROPEAN EXCELLENCE (EEX). This award proves the European origin of the instruments and a guarantee of their long lifetime, professional service and high value in use. 2008 - An own subsidiary – PETROF USA is opened; another concert grand pianos P 237 Monsoon, P 173 Breeze, and P 159 Bora.
2009 - New generation of PETROF pianos is completed. Cooperation with an audio-legend Mark Levinson (speakers for high-end audio systems DANIEL HERTZ).
2012 – A new piano of modern design – P 127 NEXT is introduced (new range – Modern Collection)
2013 – The way of intonation is innovated; PETROF pianos now feature higher dynamic range and the intonation lasts longer.
2014 - PETROF celebrates its 150th anniversary. A high-end brand ANT. PETROF is introduced together with its first model ANT. PETROF 275.
2015 – The grand piano ANT. PETROF 225 was introduced. Mgr. Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová was awarded titles of MANAGER OF THE YEAR (MANAŽERKA ROKU), MANAGER OF THE INDUSTRY (MANAŽERKA ODVĚTVÍ), AN EXCELLENT MANAGER OF A MEDIUM-SIZED COMPANY (VYNIKAJÍCÍ MANAŽER STŘEDNÍ FIRMY ), and TOP 10 MANAGER OF THE YEAR (TOP 10 MANAŽER ROKU). PETROF won the first place in TRADITION (TRADICE) category of a prestigious competition CZECH GOODWILL and the award CZECH BUSINESS SILVER in The Business of 2015 (Firma roku 2015) competition.
